  • (1888PressRelease) March 14, 2019 - ASTM International has introduced a new standard – ASTM F3343-19 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Infant Bathers – to address some of the foreseeable hazards associated with the use of infant bathers.

ASTM F3343-19 defines ‘infant bather’ as:
“A stand-alone product intended to provide support for an occupant who cannot sit upright unassisted (approximately 0 to 6 months) in a reclining position during bathing by a caregiver but not intended to retain water.”

In most instances, infant bathers are used in adult bath tubs or in or next to sinks. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has identified several incidents involving infant bathers, such as drowning when used in adult tubs with water or collapsing during transportation with the infant inside the bather.

ASTM F3343-19 establishes performance requirements, test methods, and labeling requirements to promote the safe use of infant bathers. It includes general requirements relating to:
    • Hazardous Sharp Edges or Points
    • Small Parts
    • Lead in Paints
    • Resistance to Collapse
    • Scissoring, Shearing, and Pinching
    • Openings
    • Protective Components
    • Labeling
    • Compliance to ASTM F2670 if the infant bather can be converted to or has a mode that can be used on or in an infant bathtub
    • Compliance to applicable Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act requirements
    • Compliance to ASTM F963, for toys accessories included with the infant bather

The new standard also has performance requirements relating to the restraint system, stability, fabric/mesh integrity, structural integrity, disassembly or collapse while lifting, as well as specific requirements for suction cups. In addition, ASTM F3343-19 has requirements stating the bather and its packaging must be marked or labeled according to the standard’s requirements and shall include instructional literature.
