  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) June 05, 2018 - With renewed community support and a $23,000.00+ prize list, “The Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic (HSCC) tradition will continue in Harlem”, shouts Richard Cox, director of UNITY Sports Productions. Cox, a Harlem native, former HSCC competitor and promoter, since 2015 is excited about re-establishing the race’s community origins. “This event was built on the shoulders of youth participants learning about bicycle safety and their community. I want to hold on to that most important tradition as we welcome the financial support from the Harlem Community Development Corporation and the Harlem Tourism Board.”

This year the event is welcoming new sponsors Colavita-Bialetti (Title Sponsor), CLIF Bar and WHOLE FOODS. With the exception of CLIF BAR, the others are relatively new to the cycling world. However with the event part of the USA CRITS series, the match up was easy. In addition to the race on June 17th, Unity Sports in collaboration with WHOLE FOODS of Harlem will host a press conference/promotional event. It is to take place outside of WHOLE FOODS Harlem located at 100 West 125th Street from 10am until 2pm on Saturday, June 16th.

The Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic was created in 1973 by David Walker, a former New York Police Community Affairs Officer in Harlem’s 25th Precinct. The Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic was designed as a community event focused on bicycle racing and safety programs for the youth. Within three years, the race became one of the premiere attractions of the United States Cycling Federation (USCF) now known as USA Cycling. Hundreds of community participants and thousands of spectators gather at Marcus Garvey Park, the site of the race since its inception.

“I am happy that we have true community partnership heading into our 46th year. With a $23000.00+ prize list, we anticipate an increase in professional cycling talent contributing to the Harlem economy,” continues Cox.

Each year since its inception in 1973, national and international champions, as well as Olympic champions have raced the Skyscraper Classic. Each year the race draws 400+ licensed cyclists from the greater NYC area, nationally and internationally. The most notably champion was Nelson Beasley Vails, a road and track cyclist from Harlem. He rode as a professional from 1988 to 1995, representing the USA in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, where he won the silver medal in the 1000-meter Match Sprint. Vails was the first African-American cyclist to win an Olympic medal and he was inducted to the US Bicycle Hall of Fame in 2009. Nelson will participate as an official spokesperson for this exciting event.
