  • (1888PressRelease) March 30, 2015 - "Margaret May Reis knows how strange she is; people have been telling her for years. At sixteen years old, though, Maggie begins to realize that strangeness is only half the story. Maggie isn't just strange - she's a witch."

A new book has taken Wattpad, the world's largest community of readers and writers, by storm. Switch, the first installment of Alyssa Cooper's new series, The Witches of Armour Hill, is currently free on this story sharing platform; but it won't be much longer. Once the finished book is published, the free version will disappear forever.

Alyssa Cooper, a Canadian poet and novelist, is choosing to crowdfund the publication of the first book in the series using Kickstarter, forgoing the traditional route of agents and publishers.

"My first three titles were handled by traditional publishers," Cooper explains, "And I was disappointed over and over again. When the first run of my poetry collection was printed with the wrong back cover, I decided it was time to make a change."

Relying on her own distribution and marketing, Cooper has independently released two short stories and a book length collection. She says that publishing Switch will be her biggest undertaking yet.

The Witches of Armour Hill tells the story of a witch coven living in modern day Peterborough, and adds a new chapter to a legend well known in Cooper's native Ontario. In 1840, it's believed that a woman from Peterborough was burned at the stake for witch craft. Switch is the story of her magic descendants, and of the secrets she left for them to discover. Cooper's readers on Wattpad have been captivated by her tale, and are looking forward not only to the release of the second installment, but to the official publication of Switch.

"I'm really excited to put this one out into the world," Cooper says. "I've learned a lot from publishing and marketing the three titles I already have, and that's why I decided to crowdfund the publication of Switch. I know that the capital will allow me to create the best title possible right from the launch, and advertise it effectively, so that I can stand out in this competitive market and continue to grow my fan base."

The Witches of Armour Hill's Kickstarter campaign launched on March 26, and will conclude on April 25. Cooper plans to have both the ebook and paperback available for sale in the summer of 2015.

Alyssa Cooper was born in Belleville Ontario, and is currently living in Kingston. She is the author of two novels and two collections, and her work has been featured in numerous literary journals and anthologies since 2008.
