New Report Shows States Affected Most by "Warm Weather Winter" of 2012
Midwest and Northeast Experienced Near-Record Warm Temperatures, Little Snow.
- (1888PressRelease) April 11, 2012 - Boston, MA -- If the winter of 2011-2012 seemed unseasonably warm for much of the United States, that's because it was: over half the country posted temperatures classified as "much above normal" by the federal agency NOAA. Now a new report by Gutter Helmet shows just which states were most affected, and how the warm winter impacted local economies.
Among the findings:
39 states were classified as "above normal" or "much above normal" by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the season.
New England had the second warmest winter in history, impacting states like Vermont, whose ski and tourism industry are dependent on colder weather.
The recent tornado outbreaks in Texas could be due in part to warm air flowing from North Dakota, which had the largest temperature rise of all 50 states.
The reason for the warm winter weather is an unusual jet stream created by the North Atlantic and Arctic Oscillations, which are climate patterns that develop due to differences in sea-level pressure. When the pressure difference is positive, warm air is pulled from the southwest (like this year); when the difference is negative, cold air is pulled from the Arctic (like last year). Global warming could also be exacerbating these pressure differences, according to experts.
The report, pulled from government weather reports and temperature data, shows with color illustrations which parts of the country were hardest hit this winter in terms of temperature and precipitation. The report also includes historical averages for each state, for easy comparison.
