Hanna Lemoine's lush landscapes shine a light on coastal erosion; opening at Guy Lyman Fine Art on May 13, 2017 is free and open to public as part of Magazine Street's Champagne Stroll.
New Orleans, LA (1888PressRelease) April 28, 2017 - Guy Lyman Fine Art announces an opening for painter Hanna Lemoine during Magazine Street's Champagne Stroll on May 13, 2017. The opening will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the gallery at 3645 Magazine Street. The exhibition is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served.
Of Cajun descent, Lemoine paints the scenic and increasingly threatened landscapes along the Louisiana coastline where she grew up.
"Grande Isle, the Louisiana barrier island where I was raised, is the fastest disappearing place on earth," said Lemoine. "Battered by coastal erosion, hurricanes, rising sea levels and the greatest oil disaster in history, my home has a unique relationship with nature. Our coastline is under assault and is constantly changing. In my paintings I try to express this flux while capturing a landscape that may soon disappear."
Lemoine said she is inspired by the old stories, folklore and wisdom that have been passed down from her Cajun ancestors. She gave this example: "Because there were no meteorologists, people back then would rely on a series of observations to predict a storm. It is said that the sky turned bright yellow before the 1893 hurricane. I use this nervous yellow in the sky of many of my paintings to evoke the trembling energy before a storm."
"My compositions portray a fragile and transitory world," Lemoine said. "I want to bring to light the issues of our coast, and I hope these paintings bring further awareness to the fragility of our environment and the need to respect it more fully."
