New Off-Shoot Brand, British Standard By Plain English, Is Launched To Celebrate Plain English's 20th Birthday
Bespoke cupboard makers, Plain English, has launched a 'no frills' brand, British Standard, to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
- (1888PressRelease) August 07, 2012 - British Standard Ltd, London, UK - British Standard by Plain English is a limited collection of off-the-shelf kitchen cupboards which are made, like Plain English cupboards, at the company's workshop in Suffolk.
The difference between the two brands is that the customer plans, collects and fits a British Standard by Plain English kitchen themselves; the cupboards come in a small range of standard sizes, and they can only be bought online from the BRITISH STANDARD website. Ironmongery has to be sourced separately.
The idea for an off-the-shelf collection evolved from Plain English's collaboration with The Prince's Foundation for Building Community's 'Natural House' project (see 'Editor's Notes') for which Plain English designed and made the kitchen. When HRH Prince Charles opened the house, he commented on the quality and craftsmanship of the cupboards and asked Plain English's Creative Director, Katie Fontana, "How can we get this to the people?"
Katie's response came in the creation of British Standard by Plain English, basing the cupboards' design and construction on the same principles she used 20 years ago to create her own longhouse kitchen. By removing the bespoke Plain English service, British Standard by Plain English can sell joinery of equal quality but at a much lower price.
A British Standard by Plain English kitchen starts from £5,000 (inc. VAT) and is available to buy at www.britishstandardcupboards.co.uk. The London showroom is due to open in Hoxton, Shoreditch at the beginning of July.
