New Nonprofit Organization Addresses Prevalence of Chronic Diseases in Kenya
New nonprofit organization, Medical Missions Kenya and Hunger Relief (MMK) organizes medical missions to offer basic healthcare services, chronic disease management, and health education awareness to under-served communities in Kenya.
- (1888PressRelease) August 12, 2011 - With 10% of the adult population in Kenya living with diabetes, and many more who have yet to be diagnosed, the need to address management of chronic diseases is as great now as ever. Given 6% of adult Kenyans are living with HIV/AIDS, the lack of information and education about chronic diseases, such as diabetes, is glaring.
Many patients are diagnosed during the later stages of the disease when little can be done to make significant lifestyle changes. Despite the statistics, the Kenyan government and nongovernmental organizations have offered little support for chronic disease self-management skills. To fill this gap, Medical Missions Kenya and Hunger Relief (MMK) seeks to promote health awareness by performing medical screenings for chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension, teach modifiable lifestyle changes, and enhance the skills of community health care workers.
"In order to prevent the devastating complications of uncontrolled diabetes, such as diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to blindness, kidney failure, neuropathy (nerve disease), diabetic ulcers, and gangrene, it is crucial that we first address health care access and health awareness issues," emphasizes Millicent Manyore, native Kenyan, registered nurse, and founder of MMK.
Founded in May 2011, MMK is a registered nonprofit organization in the state of California and has applied for 501c(3) status. MMK seeks to combat hunger, improve access to health care services, and promote health awareness education in underserved Kenyan communities through medical missions run by volunteer doctors and nurses.
In addition to medical volunteers for the mission to Kenya in December 2011, MMK also seeks assistance for much-needed medical equipment and supplies, such as diabetic glucometers, blood pressure monitors, and medications.
