New learning laboratories within Hantz Woodlands
The trees that were planted next to Southeastern High School in May of 2015 have since become a learning space where students learned how to start a small business.
- (1888PressRelease) April 09, 2016 - Detroit, MI - Students in an entrepreneurship class harvested grapevines from edges of the new woodlot. Grapevines were woven in to wreaths and were sold at the new Carhartt store on Cass Avenue in Detroit this past Christmas season.
As part of its commitment to clean up the community, the Hantz Woodlands is hosting a tree planting party and saying thank you to its supporters and the community for working to clean up and revitalize an area of Detroit hit by economic and environmental decline. This year, on May 7th, volunteers will plant an additional 3,000 sugar maple trees adjacent to Detroit Enterprise Academy. This K-8 charter school, located at Beniteau and Kercheval on Detroit's lower east side, will use the woodlot as a learning laboratory where students can participate in hands-on learning across all subject matters. Wayne County Farm Bureau has offered to introduce Enterprise Academy teachers to their award winning "Ag In The Classroom" curriculum to enhance student learning.
The woodlot learning laboratory is full of hands-on opportunities for students. In addition to math work related to tree spacing and growth, students can develop plant and insect collections and analyze soil quality. When the trees grow larger, students will be able to tap the trees to make maple syrup.
There are five schools within Hantz Woodlands. "In coming years we should be able to establish a woodlot learning laboratory next to each school. These investments make neighborhoods cleaner, safer, and more attractive. We invite you to join us," says Mike Score, President of Hantz Woodlands.
In addition, on May 7, 2016, the Hantz Foundation is hosting the very first Timber Trot 5K, set to kick off at 9am. Starting at the Detroit Waldorf School, participants will trot their way through the timber lined streets of the Hantz Woodlands to benefit education on the east side of Detroit. The trot will end at Detroit Enterprise Academy, where the Hantz Woodlands is hosting the 3rd Annual Tree Planting Day. All runners and walkers receive a t-shirt and a medal for participating.
The day is not just about participating in a 5K and planting trees, however. The event is to bring thousands of people together to create a community of caring and help to showcase the pride and joy found in east Detroit.
