New iPhone Hearing Protection App Shoots Down Electronic Ear Protectors

  • (1888PressRelease) November 06, 2013 - Audio app pioneers Essency, publish a controversial hearing safety chart for electronic ear defenders designed for shooting, ahead of the release of a hearing protection app.

The newly published hearing safety chart at www.gunsonics.com compares the reaction time of leading electronic ear defenders as specified by their manufacturers, to show in graphic terms how gunshot noise forms an ear-damaging peak, before the ear defender can react.

Electronic ear defenders sold for shooting use, have a microphone on one or both ear cups that feed an internal amplifier, which then transmits ambient sounds to the user with speakers inside the ear cups.

When a gun is fired the amplifier temporarily shuts down and hearing protection
is dependent on the speed of shut down and the passive attenuation of the ear cups.

The key factor is whether electronic ear defenders can act fast enough to prevent harmful sound pressure peaks from reaching the user's ears, via the internal electronics.

Gunshots blasts reach the most ear damaging levels inside 2 milliseconds (two thousandths of a second) and are millions of times louder than the safe listening levels recommended by The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH USA).

The sound pressure level (SPL) of gunfire, varies from 144dB for a 0.22 calibre pistol to 170dB for larger revolvers or rifles.

NIOSH states that exposure to one gunshot at 140 dB SPL constitutes 100% of a person's daily allowable noise exposure. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA USA) permissible exposure limit for impulsive noise is also 140 dB SPL.

Anybody subjecting his or her ears to 1.5ms of an amplified gunshot, is risking non-reversible, noise induced hearing loss, tinnitus or even instant deafness.

Essency co-founder, Alex Georgiou said: "The immense processing power of the iPhone blows away the tech used in electronic ear protectors. The hearing safety chart on www.gunsonics.com shows that the GunSonics! App does not amplify any part of a gunshot blast and when used with high NRR passive ear protectors, GunSonics! provides the safest method to date to hear, talk and shoot at a fraction of the price of electronic ear defenders."

The GunSonics! App works with passive ear protectors, worn over the top of Apple standard issue headsets connected to an iPhone or iPod Touch. This allows shooters to choose passive ear protectors with a high NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) for maximum protection.

GunSonics!® for iPhone will be officially released on 7 November 2013 on Apple's iTunes App Store, priced at $9.99 USD and £6.99 GBP.

GunSonics!® for Android will follow shortly.
