New IEEE Computer Society Guide Provides Advice on Technical Publishing
The IEEE Computer Society has produced a new guide to help steer engineers and scientists through the publishing process.
- (1888PressRelease) September 04, 2012 - LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - "What Every Technical Author Needs to Know" is intended to help new authors prepare technical ideas for publication and advise new and experienced authors on protecting their published articles.
The 36-page guide is available in .PDF for US $15 (US $12 for IEEE Computer Society members) via the Computer Society store or in paperback for US $19 on Amazon.com and through our CreateSpace e-store.
The guide is authored by David Alan Grier, associate professor of International Science and Technology Policy at George Washington University and a frequent IEEE Computer Society contributor, and Evan Butterfield, IEEE Computer Society director of Products and Services and an expert on copyright and intellectual property issues. Grier is the author of "When Computers Were Human" and "Too Soon to Tell." Butterfield was formerly vice president of product development and publisher for Kaplan Professional in Chicago.
"There are many ways of approaching the problem of writing technical articles, publishing information, and protecting ideas," said Grier. "This concise guide presents a few strategies that are simple to use and have been successful in the past."
The guide covers the structure of a technical article, research framework, how to formulate an argument, and various aspects of copyright law.
"Publication is a key element of science and engineering, as it not only spreads new ideas and practices but also sustains technical communities," said Butterfield.
