A concise guide to African American history in the national parks, this insightful book chronicles the legacy of African Americans through American history, from slavery to civil rights. The book's introduction was written by National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis, and content was developed with the assistance of National Park Service historians and interpreters.
The release of the Guidebook to African American History in the National Parks coincides with the unveiling of the only memorial on the National Mall dedicated to a person that was not a president. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial immortalizes the leader of the civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Featuring dozens of historic and present day images, the book pieces together the many facets of African American history, and presents it in a way that encourages all people to explore and discover African American history through our national parks and historic sites. This book will engage visitors and inspire them to learn more about African American history in the national parks.
