“No,” he sniffed, getting to his feet, his anger now replaced by fear, fear of what it would mean if he were forced to kill this defenceless woman. “I’m sorry Marcus, I’m not a murderer, this just isn’t right.” The Husk had watched the whole spectacle with her un-feeling eyes, all the while continuing with her low sobbing. Joel decided to keep quiet and let Marcus take charge.
“I know what it looks like, but I promise you, this thing,” he said pointing back at the pitiful creature. “This thing is not human, she does not feel pain, she does not feel love or have memories, she probably doesn’t even know she exists beyond her own hunger.”
“Hunger?” Nate asked, his voice but a squeak, mere seconds away from cracking. Marcus nodded.
“All these things want is blood, human blood, they roam the world looking for people to devour. They are the epitome of evil, that is why we have brought you here. Not to be a murderer, but to learn how to recognise evil, and to do what is necessary to stop its spread.”
Nate looked at Marcus for a moment and then at the Husk, and he took a step forward, hoping to see something which the others did not, something to confirm her humanity. Suddenly the Husk lurched forwards, its arms outstretched, hoping to reach Nate with hands that were no longer there. Joel held firmly onto the pole and yanked her back, stopping the Husk just inches from Nate’s face. Nate jumped back, his heart on the verge of bursting.
“No, I’m not doing it,” he said resolutely, continuing to take steps back.
