New Deep Learning algorithm better at diagnosing caries than practicing dentists
ParallelDots has released a research paper on Dentistry which enhances the performance of dentists in detecting a wide range of dental cavities.

The AI system acts as a second opinion for the dentists with way higher sensitivity on the task of detecting cavities than the dentists themselves. More than 5,000 well-annotated bitewing radiographs were utilized for developing the AI system for automated diagnosis of dental caries.
Muktabh Mayank, ParallelDots' Chief Scientist and Co-founder, elaborated on their research, "Our system consists of a deep fully convolutional neural network (FCNN) consisting of 100+ layers, which is trained to mark caries on bitewing radiographs. We have compared the performance of our proposed system with three practising dentists for detecting dental caries on bitewing radiographs. We were able to exceed the average performance of the dentists in both recall (sensitivity) and F1-Score (agreement with truth) by a significant margin."
ParallelDots will soon release a product, DentistryAI built on this technology which can be deployed in any dental clinic to diagnose caries. They have secured an IRB approval to test this technology in North American clinics.
