New Book Reveals Lehigh Acres History Local Author Showcases Lehigh Acres Rich History in Images
Carla Ulakovic, a member of the Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce and an honorary member of the Lehigh Acres Rotary Club, has called on the community's residents, reviewed personal photographic collections of long-standing local families, and conducted numerous interviews to narrate a visual voyage through the history of Lehigh Acres in her new book Images of America: Lehigh Acres.
- Fort Myers-Cape Coral, FL (1888PressRelease) September 19, 2014 - Through the vision of Leonard Lee Ratner and his business partners in the Lee County Land and Title Company, Lehigh Acres grew from a patch of southwest Florida's wild lands to a beautiful, booming community. Carla Ulakovic celebrates this fulfilled dream and more in her new book, Lehigh Acres, the latest addition to Arcadia Publishing's iconic Images of America series. "This book examines the history of Lehigh Acres from the birth of corporation town, the cultivation of a true community, the exodus of the corporation, real estate boom and bust and small town charms that remain in Lehigh Acres." Ulakovic says.
With the expansion of the Lee County Land and Title Company's holdings, Lehigh Acres grew to one of the biggest suburban communities in the country. With more than 200 images, Ulakovic reveals the city's growth and prosperity. Carla said, "The increase in population has led to the addition of new schools; new businesses have been built, and community clubs, organizations, and agencies continue to promote community pride through festivals and cultural events."
Just as Leonard Lee Ratner did not solely grow Lehigh Acres, so Ulakovic credits the Lehigh Acres community with giving her stories, history, and inspiration for this book. "This project was sparked by a curiosity for the town I grew up in and fueled by a desire to preserve its past. It would have been a near-imposable feat to compile this story if not for the diligent historical preservation done by many of this community's members," Ulakovic said.
Highlights of Lehigh Acres include:
- Over 200 images of Lehigh Acres from 1950 to present day
- A profile of the founder and pioneers of Lehigh Acres
- Images of Lehigh Acres' first institutions and organizations.
