- Cincinnati, OH-KY-IN (1888PressRelease) September 30, 2014 - On Monday, October 6, 2014 Arcadia Publishing will add Cincinnati's Freemasons to its growing library. Local author Donald I. Crews, active freemason and professional librarian, researched the information for this book and pulled images from over 30 sources in the Cincinnati area.
The first Masonic lodge in Cincinnati was chartered in 1791, which is less than three years after the town's founding. Local residents and visitors to Cincinnati may stumble upon the Cincinnati Masonic Center, which has been a prominent landmark in downtown for 86 years, but many have probably never been inside. This book contains approximately 20 images of the interior of this structure.
In addition, this book highlights many leaders of the Masonic brotherhood who have devoted their time, money and effort to the brotherhood. A never-before-published daguerreotype of Griffin Yeatman, an early settler, is displayed. Also, many previously unpublished images of William B. Melish - prominent Cincinnati businessman and national Freemason - are in the book.
Highlights of Cincinnati's Freemasons include:
- A Masonic mystery revealed: pictures of the U.S. Gunboat St. Louis, a civil war vessel, have what appears to be a Masonic emblem situated between its stacks revealing a connection to Cincinnati's Masons.
- Since, fraternalism of every sort was hugely popular at the turn of the 20th century in Cincinnati and throughout the U.S., the last chapter includes some of these organizations.
- Images of the Cincinnati Masonic Temple's restaurant, Temple Caterers, are featured in the book.
