  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) October 01, 2013 - How do we achieve excellence? That's the big question behind an engaging new blog, launching today, by the president of Southern California-based Woodbury University (www.woodbury.edu).

Titled "Reflections on Excellence" and written by Woodbury University President Luis Maria R. Calingo, Ph.D, the first installment of the twice-monthly blog addresses "Pursuing Excellence in Higher Education." Examining excellence across a wide range of disciplines, upcoming posts will consider the contributions of entrepreneur and Woodbury founder F.C. Woodbury, reveal best practices of Malcolm Baldrige Award winners in education, and recognize Woodbury's growing reputation as a global university with an international student population.

"In addition to providing a forum for me to share my experience and insights on topics relevant to Woodbury University and the broader educational community, it is my hope that thought leaders from across the spectrum, as well as students and parents, will join me in establishing an ongoing dialogue on issues that matter locally, regionally and globally," said Calingo. "Technology, in the form of social media, has provided us with a new kind of connective glue that links us together in exciting ways. I look forward to reading what others have to say as much as I look forward to offering my own viewpoints."

Calingo was installed as Woodbury's 13th president in October 2012 after serving in leadership roles at Dominican University of California; the Boler School of Business at John Carroll University, the Jesuit School of Cleveland; and the College of Business Administration at California State University, Long Beach, among others. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of the Philippines, and a B.S. in industrial engineering from the University of the Philippines. Dr. Calingo's professional interests include servant leadership, strategic planning, total quality management and international business with a focus on Southeast Asia. He has served as a member of the Board of Examiners of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the country's highest award for quality and performance excellence, since 1997.

An international expert in strategic planning and quality management, Dr. Calingo has assisted the governments of Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam on the establishment and implementation of their Baldrige-based national awards for quality and business excellence, as well as the infusion of quality assurance into their higher education systems.
