Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) September 28, 2011 - John Muter, president and chief operations officer of New Atlantic Contracting, Inc.(http://www.new-atlantic.net), a licensed general contractor providing traditional general contracting, construction management and design build services in the institutional, educational, health care and industrial markets across North Carolina, has announced that the firm served as the general contractor for the Wake Forest University's Reynolda Hall project. The 22,500 square foot renovation, valued at $1.3 million, houses the administrative and student activities offices, dining services and a central information desk. Construction work occurred on schedule during the school's 2011 summer break and encompassed several new rooms, such as a third floor conference room with updated whiteboards and projection surfaces, on the second floor is the new Personal and Career Development Office, and a third floor space design to allow efficient proximity of several inter-related departments that were previously isolated in different locations around campus.

The project emphasized the restoration of Reynolda Hall. The architecture freshens up the feel of the building, while respecting the beautiful, unique, and historic design. Even in contemporary spaces, which are contained within specific suites, the existing trim, moldings, columns, and window detailing were maintained throughout, and an existing structural masonry wall was revealed. These features highlight the historic structure through contrast with the new materials and spaces. For example, even though the space has a new function, the third floor grand ballroom ceiling was restored, to allow a glimpse of the original architecture that includes the high, vaulted ceiling, intricate perimeter plaster crown molding, and wall casings and trim. Original kitchen locations were discovered, bathrooms and plumbing chases, long since forgotten, were revealed, and existing utilities were uncovered. In some cases, for instance the second floor career services reception desk, these features were actually highlighted in the final design.

Other upgrades provided additional user control and preparations for an eventual building wide upgrade to the mechanical systems, replacement of the original electrical wiring in several of the renovated areas, and the installation of a new direct/indirect ceiling mounted light fixtures to provide increased quality-of-task lighting with less glare. Many of the existing restrooms were upgraded with additional accessibility features that included wider doors, clear floor areas, and accessibility fixtures.

Conservation efforts included waste management (all trash and disposables were sorted and recycled carefully throughout the construction process), the reuse and recycling of more than 100 existing wood doors, and the installation of new water-saving dual flush valves in the restrooms and energy-saving dual switched light fixtures in all offices. Throughout the building, sustainable interior finish elements with high recycled content and low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions were used.
