Local N.C. Contractor Renovates Old Elementary School In $13.1 Million Project. End Quote

Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) July 26, 2011 - John Muter, president and chief operations officer of New Atlantic Contracting, Inc.(http://www.new-atlantic.net), a licensed contractor providing general contracting, construction management and design build services to the institutional, educational, health care and industrial markets in North Carolina, has announced that the firm served as the general contractor for the recently opened Cary Arts Center, a 47,000-square-foot renovation and addition to Old Cary Elementary School at 101 Dry Ave. valued at $13.1 million. The three-story building provides rooms for classes, studio, rehearsal and performance, and office space for visual arts, ceramic arts (including a kiln room), and performing arts. The grand dedication for the Cary Arts Center is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13 at 2 p.m.

The center has been the home to at least three different schools since Frank Page, Cary's founder, built the original Cary Academy circa 1867. The present building was built in 1938-1939 in the Neoclassical Revival style. Original woodwork frames the hall entrances, and some original hardwood floors and lockers remained intact as well. Approximately 7,100 square feet was added to the building, including a stage with fly loft with the renovation of an existing media-torium. The theatre was gutted and overhauled with a completely new interior. The front hall has been opened up as a two-story foyer, complete with a glass wall of artwork that depicts historical photos of the old school as well as a unique staircase made out of glass in different colors. Using the same materials employed in the Grand Canyon Skywalk, the stairway consists of steps with glass in three different panes, with a layer of colored film between panes to provide different hues such as navy blue and indigo.

The scope of work by New Atlantic Contracting for the project included site development, landscaping, site utilities, masonry, structural steel, miscellaneous metals, carpentry and millwork, roofing, fireproofing, waterproofing, builders hardware, aluminum windows, hollow metal, glass and glazing, drywall, painting, ceramic tile, carpeting, fire sprinkler, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical work.
