  • Pittsburgh, PA (1888PressRelease) March 28, 2014 - Michael D. Alston, who holds an MBA from Robert Morris University and is a certified Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) and a Certified Dangerous Goods Professional (CDGP) who first got started in his career in 1979 working at a chemical facility as a janitor. Working himself up through the ranks, he went to night school to finish his Bachelor's Degree in Logistics Management, also at Robert Morris University before pursuing his master's. He loaded trucks, tank cars, barges, and filling drums. By 1987 Mr. Alston had become a shift supervisor and by 1996 he became corporate hazmat manager, taking on several positions in the interim, including rail fleet manager, barge operations manager, international shipping manager, ISO management representative, and rail safety manager.

Today, as vice-president of operations for Transportation Compliance and Associates, Mr. Alston and his wife lead a group of consultants that provide DOT/IATA/IMDG compliance training, audits, security plans, consulting, and a full suite of hazardous material professional services. The consulting firm provides various services across the US and one of its major programs offered is providing a complete, turnkey hazmat package to its clients, which has been very successful because it affords the client the knowledge and expertise of a compliance partner 24/7/365 at a fraction of the cost of a full-time manager.

"I was always a hands-on person and I was able to relate with the shipping personnel since I had been there," Mr. Alston explained about his successes in the field. "I have a passion for hazmat and for helping people navigate through the maze of regulatory requirements."

In 1999, the company's transportation department was the first stand-alone department to ever receive an ISO 9002 certification and Mr. Alston was the ISO management representative to lead that effort. Mr. Alston was also a member of the first class to receive credentials as a certified dangerous goods professional, which is just now being offered by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management.
