  • (1888PressRelease) October 26, 2010 - La Grange Park, IL - A team featuring some of the nation's most prominent leaders in the nuclear industry will be in Charlotte, NC, October 25-26 for the Second Annual Nuclear Energy Insider Construction Summit, ANS Executive Director John (Jack) M. Tuohy, Jr., P.E., announced today. The team includes:

    • Vice President and President Elect of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) Eric P. Loewen, Ph.D.
    • Donald Hoffman, president and chief executive officer of Excel Services Corporation, a member of the board of ANS, its finance committee, and chair of its membership committee, and
    • David Matthews, ANS member and director of the division of new reactor licensing at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

When asked about the meeting Tuohy said, "The American Nuclear Society is the premier scientific organization for nuclear science and technology, and our members include the brightest minds in the industry. We're delighted to have the opportunity to share that knowledge with other key industry leaders here in Charlotte who are involved in nuclear construction."

Loewen, Chief Consulting Engineer of GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy and a Wilmington, NC business executive, will deliver a talk entitled "Analyzing the Domestic Nuclear Revival." Said Loewen, "I'm deeply passionate about the promise nuclear energy holds for our future, which is why it is important to address the fundamental economic, environmental and political issues driving domestic nuclear growth. I'm looking forward to addressing all of these subjects during my presentation."

Matthews, a long time member of ANS as well as the NRC, is scheduled to participate in a panel on the implications of the Part 52 Licensing and how Inspections, Tests, Analyses, and Acceptance Criteria will impact project timelines. He will also review the latest design certification updates, and how successfully to communicate with the NRC.

Hoffman, who is among ANS's most dedicated members, participates in the event as a Global Gold Sponsor through his firm, Excel Services. "I'm so proud of my involvement in ANS and I'm eager to use this opportunity to promote the Society as the most distinguished group of men and women who have devoted their lives to nuclear science and technology," said Hoffman. "We continue to seek ways to expand the role of ANS in the nuclear renaissance and by being here, I can demonstrate to these key players in new construction how ANS can help them achieve their goals," he continued.

Added Tuohy, "All three of these members have given extraordinary service to the Society and I know they will be excellent ambassadors for our industry as together we work to advance our science and technology to improve the lives of us all."

Established in 1954, ANS is a professional organization of engineers and scientists devoted to the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology. Its 11,000 members come from diverse technical backgrounds covering the full range of engineering disciplines as well as the physical and biological sciences. They are advancing the application of these technologies to improve the lives of the world community through national and international enterprise within government, academia, research laboratories and private industry.
