  • (1888PressRelease) July 08, 2016 - The winner of the 2016 Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Competition is Nashid Ibn Ali for his essay, "Environmental Advocacy Through Class Actions". As the winner, Nashid Ibn Ali will receive a $5,000 prize as well as a complimentary 2016 Public Citizen membership.

    The Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Competition is sponsored by R. Ben Hogan III of Hogan Law Office, PC, in Birmingham, Alabama, and Gerson H. Smoger of Smoger & Associates in Dallas, Texas, and Oakland, California. It is administered by Public Citizen.
    The competition was open to all current law students and all masters of law students. Each submission had to be an original, unpublished academic work, but simultaneous submissions were accepted.

    A panel of lawyers, including law professors and practitioners, judgeed the submissions based on depth of analysis, quality of writing, originality, and thoroughness and Nashid Ibn Ali was notified by email that he is the 2016 winner, the only one winning paper chosen and awarded the prizes.

    Nashid Ibn Ali's essay, entitled "Environmental Advocacy Through Class Actions", focused on recontextualizing environmental class actions so that the public views them as instruments of justice with several elements which advocacy for a better world and a healthier society. The essay will be available on the Public Citizen's website and Nashid Ibn Ali will be available for further comment and consultation on the use of environmental class actions as advocacy tools for environmental justice.
