My Girlfriend's House, a Prince George's County nonprofit that supports women and teen girls living in homelessness and low income communities, will renovate 27 rooms for women living in a DC homeless shelter.
- Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) March 22, 2014 - On Saturday, April 5, 2014 My Girlfriend's House (MGH) returns with their first Shelter Room Makeover Party of the year. This signature community service effort was created to empower, inspire and uplift women and children living in homeless shelters by renovating their rooms into modern-styled, quality suites.
In its third year, the Shelter Room Makeover Party offers an opportunity for My Girlfriend's House, their mentees and its community supporters to visit local shelters and perform the ultimate room renovation, equipped with new furniture, fresh paint jobs, and beautiful home décor. This time the Prince George's County nonprofit will enlist the help of various community groups and volunteers to renovate a three level shelter that houses 15 residents in Rachel's Women Center, a Washington, DC homeless shelter for women.
The 3-floor facility features six bathrooms, six kitchens, three reading areas and three living room/dining room areas, along with 15 occupant bedrooms. My Girlfriend's House is tasked with renovating each room and giving them a fresh, clean and beautiful look for the women residents. "I always have such a good time when we host these makeover parties", 15 year old Tylisha Blackwell, a mentee of MGH's mentoring program exclaimed. "The looks on the women's faces are always so priceless. I'm happy that we can come to their home and in just 3 hours, make so much of an impact."
The enthusiasm and appreciation is shared amongst the residents and staff of Rachel's Women Center. "Something this huge is such a blessing to our shelter and the women who live here," Executive Director Dawn Swan of Rachel's Women Center shared. "These women experience so many trials in their lives that it's refreshing for them to receive a labor of love from complete strangers."
The outreach is one of many under My Girlfriend's House's Homeless Outreach Program. The goal of the program is to encourage positivity and empowerment to women in the community who need additional support. My Girlfriend's House Executive Director, Veronica Eyenga says it's her pleasure and duty to give back to the community. "I love to see women empower each other and I love to see a community of women of all ages and backgrounds come together to serve and uplift another woman."
