  • (1888PressRelease) October 21, 2010 - Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) is rated No. 1 in Georgia for stroke care and is best rated in the Savannah area for cardiac, pulmonary, and critical care services. The findings are based on analysis conducted by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. Memorial is also among the top 10 percent nationally for stroke care and gastrointestinal medical services. All of the results are published in the Thirteenth Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study.

The study analyzed approximately 40 million Medicare patients from every U.S. hospital from 2007 through 2009. After looking at patient outcomes, mortality rates, and complication rates, HealthGrades assigned 1 star (poor), 3 stars (as expected), or 5 stars (best) to hospitals in 26 categories, from bypass surgery to knee replacement to treatment for heart attack.

Memorial achieved 5 stars for the treatment of heart failure, stroke, pneumonia, sepsis, respiratory failure, gastrointestinal bleed, spinal fusion surgery, and bowel obstruction.

"Our patients expect and deserve the highest level of care. The entire team at Memorial is committed to meeting and then exceeding those expectations. We're proud of this recognition and proud to serve our community," said Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D., MBA, president and CEO of Memorial Health.

According to the study, top-rated hospitals had a 53 percent lower mortality rate than the U.S. national average when looking at patient outcomes in 17 procedures and diagnoses.
