Background on MSQLP:
Who we are:
The Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life Project (MSQLP) is a social service organization that serves primarily low and moderate-income clients living with Multiple Sclerosis, their caregivers and family members, in the Tri-County area of Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties. Multiple Sclerosis has a profound impact on an individual's physical, psychological and social domains. Over 1000 persons with MS are believed to be living in our service area. Our mission statement is as follows:
MSQLP recognizes that people living with chronic illness have unmet needs. We are committed to filling these gaps by improving the quality of life of persons with MS in our local communities. We work with clients and their families to create comprehensive individualized plans and programs that support client independence. Our services are free.
What does MSQLP do?
House Calls:
Our clinical staff visits clients in their homes. Together, clients and staff develop a care plan with objectives that will improve the client's quality of life. The staff then monitors the client's progress and works with the client to meet identified objectives and solve problems to resolution. We help clients navigate through the many social service systems. We guide and assist clients by providing information and encouragement that allows them to manage their needs independently. This empowerment is a core value of our project.
Supportive Therapy:
MSQLP offers monthly support groups, a bi-weekly water aerobics class, and social opportunities throughout the year.
Education:
MSQLP produces a topic-based newsletter that is sent to our constituency and is posted on our website quarterly. We provide local information, as well as links to global knowledge from our website:www.msqlp.org. We host educational events and have a lending resource library available to all clients. We also offer mini-workshops that address a variety of topics.
Advocacy:
MSQLP advocates for MS clients individually and for the MS community at large. We make presentations to health care organizations and non-health care groups to raise awareness of the realities of MS and our services.
Volunteer Opportunities:
MSQLP has a variety of volunteer opportunities including: friendly visitors, friendly phone callers, handymen, office support, and event helpers.
