MRIs May Help Improve Prostate Cancer Diagnosis
The study that is pointing to the benefits of using MRI technology first involved more than 700 men who all had high prostate-specific antigen test results. None of the men in the group had undergone previous biopsies.
- (1888PressRelease) July 27, 2017 - Irving, TX – Founder of the renowned Prostate Seed Institute talks about the potential benefits of MRIs.
When all signs point to the development of prostate cancer, most men find themselves reporting for a transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy to confirm or deny the suspicion. Doctors, however, may soon be suggesting the use of a MRI first after studies have found this imaging tool may help as many as 27 percent of all men avoid the need for a more invasive biopsy all together.
“The current protocol for diagnosing prostate cancer calls for the use of a biopsy so that tissues samples may be taken and tested,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “MRIs, however, are proving themselves to be very useful as a potential pre-screen prior to a biopsy.”
When the results of the three tests were compared in the 570 cases where men underwent all three tests, the results were eye-opening. Researchers found the MRI was able to identify more than 90 percent of the cases of clinically significant prostate cancer. In comparison, the biopsies produced less stellar results.
“MRI technology may provide a viable triage test in between bloodwork and biopsies,” says Dr. Echt. “The results so far are quite encouraging and point to the potential benefits of MRI use before biopsies are undertaken.”
Men who are suspected to have prostate cancer are urged to talk with their doctors about all diagnostic procedures, their benefits and risks. While biopsies remain critical in diagnostics, MRIs may someday soon help some men avoid the need.
