Mr MV Subbiah Conferred the Padma Bhushan Award
Shri MV Subbiah, Former Chairman of the Murugappa Group and Chairman of National Skill Development Corporation, has been conferred the Padma Bhushan award for distinguished service of high order in the field 'Trade and Industry'.

On receiving the honour, Shri MV Subbiah said, "I have always felt that such an honour though awarded to an individual, is a recognition of the team work. In my case, this is an honour for the great work done by the teams at the Murugappa Group and the NSDC."
The Padma Awards, the country's highest civilian awards, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in all disciplines/ fields of activities, viz. art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. 'Padma Vibhushan' is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; 'Padma Bhushan' for distinguished service of high order and 'Padma Shri' for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
About Shri MV Subbiah:
Shri MV Subbiah is a 3rd generation member of the Murugappa family. He is the former Chairman of Murugappa Group and retired in January 2004 after working 43 years in the family business. Today Murugappa group is a USD 3.8 Billion conglomerate with headquarters out of Chennai, India.
Currently he serves as the Managing Trustee of their Family Foundation, which operates four schools, four hospitals, a Polytechnic college and a Research Centre for bringing appropriate technologies to the Villages of India. In 2009 Govt. of India asked him to be Chairman of the newly formed public-private corporation called the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) with a mandate to skill 150 million youth in India. He also serves on Boards of Axis Bank, SRF and LMW.
Shri MV Subbiah is a Past President of the Association of Indian Engineering Industries, the predecessor to CII (Confederation of Indian Industries). He is a former board member of FBN (Family Business Network) International. He has been active with various other organizations in the past, including the Madras Crafts Foundation and WORTH Trust (Workshop of the Rehabilitation of the Handicapped).
In the late 60's Shri MV Subbiah turned around Carborundum Universal. In the 70's he was responsible for turning around T.I.Cycles. With this background the group took over an ailing 200 hundred year old conglomerate E.I.D Parry (India) Ltd. which also he turned around in mid 80's.
Shri MV Subbiah has been recipient of the JRD Tata Business Leadership Award in 2002 and the National HRD Award in 1988. The Murugappa family is a recipient of the Distinguished Family Business Award from IMD Lausanne in 2001.
Shri MV Subbiah studied engineering at the University of Birmingham and got his Diploma in Industrial Administration from the University of Aston U.K. He attended the PMD programme at the Harvard Business School in 1971. After his retirement he went on sabbatical for a year to the Centre for Family Enterprises at Kellogg Business School. In 2011, he received an honorary degree of doctorate from the University of Birmingham for his contribution to business.
