  • (1888PressRelease) April 05, 2011 - Morgan James Publishing (www.Morgan-James.com) releases In Search of Civility: Confronting Incivility on the College Campus.

Attending a college or university inspires growth in its students, fostering characteristics that will carry students throughout their educational years and into their careers. However, incivility, or the lack of regard for others, is an unwelcome characteristic that has become more prevalent on college campuses. Kent M. Weeks, the author of In Search of Civility, provides a very specific definition of civility and what the practices of civility in our day and age look like, from manners and politeness, to the giving of oneself to strengthen the community. Civility is not an innate instinct, so colleges and universities are the prime venue where students can learn about and develop civility.

In Search of Civility addresses issues such as Greek Life pledging and initiations, alcohol, and hazing. The incivility that can arise from pranks at parties and the hazing of new members can have long-reaching effects for not only the fraternity and sorority members involved but also their families and friends. Incivility also exists in the classroom in the form of cheating and plagiarism, two practices that are becoming more common as the urge to overload both personal and academic schedules prevails. Incivility associated with athletics and the subtle issues that universities face with student athletes are also presented.

Weeks confronts these previously-identified issues of incivility, as well as incivility between roommates, incivility taking the form of pirating music and games, and incivility affecting body image by following the real-life experiences of four college freshmen who want to do the right thing but have a difficult time distinguishing between the right and wrong choices. Reviewing their actions and unique situations, Weeks encourages readers to decide whether or not their own past actions reflected civility. The goal of In Search of Civility is to cause readers to think ahead about what they would do in those same situations and decide beforehand what would be the best way to respond with civility.
