Moral Mondays Florida Launches Statewide Mobilization Initiative
Moral Monday is a protest movement which began in North Carolina in 2013 under the leadership of Reverend William Barber and the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP. Since then, seaveral progressive, labor and religious organizations have joined the movement and it is spreading beyond North Carolina.
- Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) October 22, 2014 - Beginning on October 27th, 2014, thousands of Floridians from across the state will rally to Get Out the Vote and protest issues that affect us all. These issues include the right to vote, marriage equality, political corruption, and extreme inequality. Kicking off well before the beginning of the 2015 Legislative Session, Moral Mondays Florida goal in cities throughout the state is to engage voters through non-partisanship, and to occupy the Moral high ground.
Reverend Louis Murphy, the Senior Pastor of Mt. Zion Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, stated:
"When we don't vote, we vote for the opposition. When we don't vote, we actually vote against our best interest. There was a time African Americans didn't have the right to vote and even today there are some that try to suppress our vote. One vote, one voice, one victory. Voting is our right, our obligation, our duty."
Florida House Representative Darryl Rouson stated:
"People protested and some died for the right to vote and participate in government. Honor their sacrifices by exercising the power of voting."
Aaron Wazlavek, Executive Director of Moral Mondays Florida, stated:
"For far too long, we have seen the effects of the Right versus Left political mentality that has pervaded our legislature, communities, and dominated our discussions locally. What Moral Mondays Florida is explicitly trying to achieve is an elevation of the discussion about Right versus Wrong. As a lifelong unionist, and Florida native, we as a state have witnessed the crippling repercussions of political corruption in the form of voter suppression, corporate personhood and revolving door regulatory capture. These forms of legalized corruption have put our very democracy in extreme peril."
Moral Mondays St. Petersburg includes groups like Awake Pinellas, the Sierra Club, Equality Florida, AFGE Local 556, and many more. By combining our efforts to involve the electorate in a mid-term election like never before, the goal is to help increase voter turnout on all sides of the aisle. Emceed by local folk singer Shana Banana, the family friendly Moral Mondays St. Petersburg rally will begin at 5pm this coming Monday, at Williams Park in downtown St. Petersburg.
