  • Salinas, CA (1888PressRelease) December 17, 2012 - The Monterey County Business Council's C2 Greywater and Rainwater Catchment Working Group just released its educational brochure for Monterey Bay area residents, "A Homeowner's Guide to Conserving Water: Rainwater Catchment and Greywater Reuse for Outdoor Use." Through funding from the California American Water's Environmental Grant Program and many hours of volunteer effort, this all-in-one water conservation brochure provides the public with accurate information about how to safely implement simple solutions for alternative sources of water for non-potable purposes in order to lower residential water use.

Providing fresh water to the residents of the Monterey Bay has been a difficult issue of resource management, with ecological concerns for endangered species, legal conflict over public trust resources, and societal need for fresh water. The urgency and need for water conservation grows as the citizenry face an uncertain fresh water future in our region. Given the current water crisis, it is imperative that our communities take steps not only to conserve water, but also to implement simple solutions like rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling to meet individual household water needs.

"Education and public outreach are critical to transition our residents from ground water dependency to environmentally responsible sources of fresh water, in an effort not to only conserve water but to show how to do it safely according to the rules outlined by the state," says Mary Ann Leffel, President of the Monterey County Business Council.

Michael Dawson, Monterey resident and co-chair of the C2 Greywater and Rainwater Catchment Working Group, adds, "Our working group - in partnership with community organizations as well as other stakeholders in business, government and academia - is uniquely positioned to expand our regional water conservation education to include "how to's" for simple and safe rainwater catchment and greywater recycling and an expanded directory of local system designers, installation professionals and equipment vendors."

Our partners on this project include California American Water, Central Coast Graywater Alliance, City of Monterey, City of Pacific Grove, City of Seaside, Ecology Action, Gabersek Landscape Architecture, Monterey Peninsula Water Management District, Marina Coast Water District, McCandliss Landscape Design, MEarth Habitat, Monterey County Health Department, Monterey Greywater Group, Monterey Peninsula Airport District, and Water Awareness Committee of Monterey County.

Printed brochures are available at the Monterey County Business Council office located on CSU Monterey Bay campus in Seaside: Building 201 (University Corporation), Suite 209 (2nd floor) at the intersection of Inter-Garrison Road and 6th Avenue. You can also pick up a copy of the brochure from one of our partners' offices listed above.
