Miss Universe Visits Moolchand; Associates Herself with Breast Cancer Awareness
Ms. Ximena Navarrete, the reigning Miss Universe, and Sanjana Jon, an international fashion designer, have urged women to educate about breast cancer and take corrective actions during the early stages of their life while interacting with patients at Moolchand Medcity on World Cancer Day.
- (1888PressRelease) February 11, 2011 - Addressing the gathering comprising of patients and general public organized by Moolchand Breast Clinic, Navarrete said that she is concerned about women health in general and breast cancer in particular as a large number of women are falling prey to this dreaded disease."
While interacting with the patients at the Moolchand Breast Clinic, Ximena said, "Breast cancer is fast becoming the most common cancer for women all over the world including India and Mexico. Therefore we want women to face the possibility of cancer and encourage screenings. It's important that women know about breast cancer and take preventative measures early in their lives."
Dr. Amit Bhargava, Consultant, Moolchand Cancer Hospital said, "Although many people are getting regular check-ups and visiting health professionals to know the state of their health-especially cancer cases but that was not enough. He pointed out that most cases go undetected because of less awareness and the social stigma attached with it."
"Compared to the west, we are seeing more patients in the advanced stage. Women with a strong family history of breast cancer who have BRCA1/2 genes should be subjected to breast cancer screening may be as early as late twenties or early thirties. In the west, even prophylactic breast removal is practiced for very high risk women said Dr. Bhargava while delivering a lecture on state of breast cancer in India. "85-90% of breast cancer is curable if detected in stage 1 but the rate drops to 10-15% if diagnosed at stage 4 when patients hardly survives beyond 2 years" he said.
There have however been new developments that provide hope for patients of this disease. The most promising among them being laparoscopic breast surgery where there is minimum incision and quick recovery. This will be milestone for patients in the coming years when introduced in India. Early detection can save cost incurred from chemotherapy and radiation- the other two treatment options. General physicians also need to be educated through awareness programs to support cancer detection cases, Dr. Bhargava further added.
