  • (1888PressRelease) February 01, 2011 - Dubai, UAE - There is an increased awareness of the range of injuries to the upper airway from the reflux of stomach secretions, or 'heart burn', including damage to the airway and voice box. Most people do not know that acid reflux can also cause voice problems and that this can happen even if they do not experience any heartburn. Understanding the causes of 'heartburn' will allow you to take the necessary steps to reduce this problem; dietary and behavioural factors common to the Middle East such as poor diet and excess bodyweight are a big part of the cause.

Dubai's Otolaryngology Exhibition & Conference 2011 will take place from 8 - 10 May 2011, at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai, and will bring together leading regional and international experts to discuss the latest up-to-date trends on treatments and technologies in ear, nose and throat disorders.

Produced by IIR Middle East's Life Sciences division, the organisers of Arab Health, Otolaryngology 2011 is accredited by the Cleveland Clinic. This CME (Continuing Medical Education) accredited event is supported by the UAE Ministry of Health and Dubai Health Authority, and sponsored by Karl Storz and Medtronic, and it allows doctors to stay in touch with best practices by keeping their medical accreditation up-to-date.

Chairman of the Otolaryngology Conference 2011, Dr Muaaz Tarabichi MD, Head of ENT Department, American Hospital Dubai, UAE, discusses the debilitating effects of acid reflux.

"We used to think that reflux only causes acidity but now we think that reflux can cause irritation of the voice box, causing change in voice and increased secretions in the throat all the way up to the nose," explains Dr Tarabichi. "Some patients also experience problems with their ears as a result of acid reflux as well as asthma and other airway problems."

Commenting on the new conference programme for Otolaryngology 2011, Dr Tarabichi said: "The educational programme will review the current ways of identifying hearing loss in newborns and the latest technologies used to improve hearing including cochlear implants and implantable hearing aids. It will also look at new technologies that help access the sinuses safely during surgery including image guided surgery and also the role of medications in controlling allergies.

"ENT specialists attending the conference will update themselves in all aspects of their field so they can provide state-of-the-art care to their patients here in the Middle East. Also, the stakes for the 2011 Middle East Update in Otolaryngology Awards have been raised with a US$10,000 cash prize offered to the top research paper presented at the meeting."

Running alongside the conference is an exhibition which demonstrates the latest technologies and product launches from manufacturers and distributors wishing to meet an influential body of senior otolaryngologists. Products such as hearing aids, laser machines, microsurgical instruments and sleep apnea devices will be on display.
