Michy E. Morillo Steps In To Battle The Teen Mental Health Crisis
Author Michy E. Morillo is raising awareness of the teen mental health crisis and sharing the steps she's taken to help.
- (1888PressRelease) May 06, 2022 - New York – Life’s adversity can be the very thing that catapults a person to greater heights. It’s a bittersweet truth we have come to know and Michy E. Morillo, spirited entrepreneur, speaker, youth coach, and author of the provocative book, Cell Dreamer, chose elevation. Years later, as an adult, she realized that being repeatedly incarcerated between the ages of 14 and 18 and expelled from high school made her uniquely designed for her life’s purpose. Following the blueprint to personal freedom that she now shares, she is reaching back to bring others along and is committed to being a transformative force in the lives of youth. She is serving as a conduit to the mindset, skills, and tools that nurture personal growth to a younger generation bombarded with confusing and often conflicting messages.
Whether incarcerated or attending school in the community, Coach Michy’s books are a game-changer. She wrote the original version to help incarcerated youth look at their time as preparation and not as a punishment. After being hired to speak at the school that once expelled her, Coach Michy became inspired by current students who reminded her of her younger self. In response, she created the Cell Dreamer, Student Version to reach even further back and do her part to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline.
Parents and schools are now enrolling youth in Coach Michy’s Dreamers Club. The membership awards lifetime login privileges to the dedicated Cell Dreamer Academy member site, where students can watch coaching videos and download activity sheets containing action points and intentional exercises designed to support the application of their new learning. Monthly, live open-access coaching videos and weekly motivational text messages have been made available to all kids through Cell Dreamer Academy’s Instagram page and Community. Her goal? To help marginalized kids gain and cultivate a growth mindset.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and in April the CDC released a report on what many are describing as a teen mental health crisis. Based on this 2021 nationally representative data, approximately one in three U.S. high school students experienced poor mental health (most of the time or always) during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the 12 months prior to the survey, 44.2 percent of teens reported persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness, 19.9 percent of teens reported seriously considering attempting suicide, and 9 percent reported attempting suicide. Through her efforts, Coach Michy is forging a healing path forward for a sector of society that is largely misunderstood. On this purpose driven journey, she reflects, “My ultimate fulfillment was seeing cops connecting with students. Students communicating with cops. Teachers relating to parents and parents forgiving their children!”
Coach Michy is living proof that our most challenging times can truly be sewn into opportunities.
