  • Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN-WI (1888PressRelease) July 29, 2010 - Courage Center has been chosen by the Minnesota Twins and Michael Cuddyer to be their charity partner for a $200,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant. The Twins are competing against 14 other Major League Baseball teams to win a grant to improve their community. In partnering with Courage Center and the Jr. Rolling Twins softball team, the Twins are hoping to build Minnesota's first accessible softball field for competitive wheelchair play.

Winning the grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project means that a dedicated wheelchair softball field would be available for practice or game-play at any time, not just when a parking lot was empty. The field would be designed and painted to look like a real softball/baseball diamond. The field would include dug-outs with canopies to keep players out of the sun when they aren't in the field and have permanent fences that designate a ball as foul or fair or as a home run.

Jan Malcolm, CEO, Courage Center said, "Participating in sports is an important part of growing up and living a full life. Sports help people build confidence, leadership and teamwork skills. We are proud that the Twins recognize the impact that providing an accessible competitive field will have for our wheelchair athletes."

Courage Center has two teams, one youth and one adult, that currently play in area parking lots; a third metro-area team would also use the field. The field would also be used by the teams to host regional and national tournaments.

Twins fans are encouraged to vote up to ten times each day. Voting ends Tuesday, August 17 at 10:59 p.m. CDT. Fans can cast their votes at www.mlb.com/PepsiRefresh or by texting
