The Incisional hernia-which is a protrusion of an organ or tissue through a previous surgical incision-was performed through a single incision in the patient's belly button. It was the first procedure of its kind to be completed at the institution where it was performed.
According to Michael A. Zadeh, M.D., the surgeon who performed the procedure, the patient may not even see evidence of the surgery. One of the major advantages of the "single port" procedure is that it utilizes only one access point, through the patient's belly button, ultimately resulting in the potential for no visible scar. By comparison, traditional laparoscopic surgeries involve three or more ½-inch or smaller incisions that may leave scars.
