- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) February 28, 2013 - WHAT:
Award-winning mezzo-soprano Abigail Fischer has been called "riveting" and a performer of "irresistible magnetism" by the New York Times. Her luminous voice was heard with the Adelphi Symphony Orchestra in Mahler's Symphony No. 3 in 2011. This rising start returns to Adelphi to perform a program of songs all about love-the joy, the passion, the pangs and the hilarity of love-accompanied by pianist and conductor, and Associate Professor Christopher Lyndon-Gee in the Concert Hall of the Performing Arts Center. Central to the program is the exquisite song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben of Robert Schumann. These eight vocal gems trace the story of a relationship from first meeting to final parting in the poetic musical language that only Schumann could have written.
Ms. Fischer will also perform songs by 20th century composers from both the classical and the popular world. Songs by the eminent American composer George Rochberg will be juxtaposed with works of the revolutionary composer Arnold Schonberg from The Book of the Hanging Gardens. Concluding the program will be songs by Stephen Sondheim and William Bolcom, whose Cabaret Songs have remained audience favorites for many years.
Fischer's expertise in music, has allowed her to perform a wide range of compositions, from the Baroque era to contemporary work, with different ensembles. Her recent highlights include starring in the multi-media opera premiere at the Kitchen in Missy Mazzoli's Song from the Uproar. She also had her LA Philharmonic debut in Peter Eötvös' Angels in America, the Handel Messiah with Virginia Symphony, the title role in Rape of Lucretia with Opera Memphis, and a recording and performance of Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass with Boston Baroque.
