  • (1888PressRelease) October 01, 2010 - A growing trend among those buying properties in Mexico has been to start taking sustainability and environmental factors into account. Along with this growing interest, a handful of Mexico agents from Playa del Carmen have begun to investigate the ins an outs of sustainable real estate.

In an interview on Friday, September 24, 2010, Thomas Lloyd, president of TOPMexicoRealEstate.com, and David Pepper, CEO of Bleu Development, both having taken an active interest in eco-friendly Playa del Carmen real estate, interviewed and exchanged ideas with Paul Sanchez of the Akumal Ecological Center (CEA, the acronym of its name in Spanish.)

In the interview, the three discussed both the current state of development in the Playa del Carmen area, and the future direction of the idea of sustainability and care for the environment.

Bleu Development's current project in Playa del Carmen is an eco-friendly boutique community called La Escondida, which provides a high-quality Mexican retirement lifestyle for residents of all ages. In addition to a range of services designed both to provide a comfortable, safe and active lifestyle within the community, as well as to enjoying all the services of the nearby area, the developer is taking decisive steps to respect the environment, which were discussed during the interview. The features include:

wind and solar electric energy (in combination with the city grid)

    rain water capture

    green transportation

    car-free environment (secure parking provided)

large amounts of green space (72% green and common space)

use of natural vegetation in the landscape

The first two points focus on responsible resource use, reducing the need to exploit non-renewable resources. The transportation, car-free community lifestyle, and green space focus on reducing polution and creating a clean air atmosphere both within and outside of the community.

During the interview, Pepper and Sanchez discussed the fact that the use natural vegetation avoids problems with invasive species, which can threaten original local wildlife; in most cases, it also provides a more pleasant atmosphere within landscaping, since the plants tend to thrive in their native area.

The interview touched on the fact that La Escondida is currently at the forefront of community developments of this type in terms of environmental emphasis. The developers also modified the community plan in order to take the natural state of the lot into consideration, which adds to the protection of the area's ecosystem.

The interview continued to discuss the future of sustainability in Playa del Carmen, with heavy emphasis on the part of Sanchez to address water treatment methods currently used by the city.

Lloyd, Pepper and Sanchez came away from the interview motivated to continue introducing new elements of sustainability into real estate development, and new tools for buyers to evaluate the properties they are buying.
