- (1888PressRelease) December 30, 2010 - Online hard rock / heavy metal magazine, Breakdowns & Beatdowns (B&B) has published its first annual Top 10 list of albums of the past year. The site, which will celebrate its first year in April 2011, is running a feature devoted to the best albums the year as chosen by B&B founders, writer/editor Lana Cooper and writer/photographer Janeé Cox.
The Top 10 list is a year-end staple of many online and print music magazines, but Breakdowns and Beatdowns has put their own spin it. The site's "Top 10 of 2010" features ten individual picks from both of its main writers, run side-by-side with brief, yet detailed explanations for each of their choices. Further separating the "Top 10 of 2010" from the rest of the year-end "Best of" lists, the feature piece is flavored with B&B's hallmark sense of humor, honesty, and attention to detail.
B&B editor Lana Cooper selected "American Slang" by folk/punk band The Gaslight Album as the Best Album of the year on the strength of its lyrics and overall songwriting, declaring that "each of the songs on American Slang take you to either a very wistful or uncomfortably emotional place as you listen and re-listen to them."
The site's co-founder, Janeé Cox, chose "Monument by Miss May I" as her pick for the #1 album of 2010, likening the young Ohio band to metal kingpins Lamb of God and proclaiming them as the genre's next big thing. Miss May I receives heavy praise in Ms. Cox's assessment and she notes that "they have allowed themselves to be influenced by most and have carved away the excess fat of the scenes, then combined the true gold with their own creativity to produce the new sound of American Metal."
As a supplement to their "Top 10 of 2010" feature, Breakdowns & Beatdowns will publish two companion pieces this week: "Close But No Cigar," highlighting honorable mentions for albums didn't crack the site's Top 10; and "You Disappoint Me," focusing on releases that did not live up to expectations.
