  • Newark, NJ (1888PressRelease) February 01, 2019 - Richard Britton, P.G., LSRP, will share his expertise on the practical aspects of groundwater at a one-day course to be held at Rutgers University, Cook Student Center, 59 Biel Rd, New Brunswick, NJ, on Wednesday, March 27, from 9:00am - 4:30pm (Check in 8:30am). This one day class focuses on practical aspects of groundwater in the fractured sedimentary bedrock of the Newark Group (Brunswick Aquifer), where thousands of sites have been impacted by industrial contaminants. Remedial activities at such sites are usually impaired by oversimplified notions regarding groundwater flow and contaminant migration, as well as by the use of inadequate hydrogeologic characterization methods.

The program is intended for geologists, hydrogeologists, environmental professional, licensed site remediation professions (LSRPs), remediation engineers, regulators, and corporate site managers responsible for the investigation and remediation of complex bedrock sites. Participants will improve their understanding of the hydrogeologic framework best used to represent sedimentary bedrock sites.

With more than 30 years of experience in the environmental engineering field, Britton is an authority on the investigation and remediation of bedrock aquifer systems. He is a recognized expert and frequent lecturer on the subject, and has co-authored several publications describing innovative investigative techniques that reveal the subsurface architecture of fractured sedimentary bedrock aquifers, and result in a more economical investigation and more successful remediation.

A Registered Professional Geologist in New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Tennessee; and certified New Jersey Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP), Mr. Britton was a valued contributor to the NJDEP’s Technical Guidance for Preparation and Submission of a Conceptual Site Model document and Field Sampling Procedures Manual. Britton frequently works with attorneys as a liability and cost allocation expert, and his technical expertise is demonstrated through regular annual speaking engagements at conferences and symposiums; and through the continuing education classes he co-teaches at Rutgers University.

Co-taught with representatives from Michalski and Associates and Princeton Geoscience, Inc. The course ‘Groundwater In Fractured Bedrock,’ will address important issues such as: Dominant role of certain bedding fractures in sedimentary bedrock and harmful consequences of using inadequate conceptual models of groundwater flow, fracture flow basics and differences with porous media, plume delineation and CEA determination at fractured bedrock sites, NJDEP’s technical guidance on groundwater investigation in fractured bedrock, how to conduct remedial investigations and groundwater cleanups at DNAPL and LNAPL Sites and various conceptual flow models applied for groundwater in bedrock, and how their use influences apparent groundwater flow direction, velocities, plume delineation, and remediation outcomes at contaminated bedrock sites.

The past president of the Association of Engineering Geologists and an active participant in the NJDEP Site Remediation Advisory Group, Mr. Britton holds a M.S. in Environmental Science, and a B.S. in Geology and Chemistry all from Rutgers University.
