Mather's-More Than a Cafe Celebrates Black History Month
Neighborhood Cafe Celebrates with Performances, Traditional African Cuisine, and Vendors.
- Chicago, IL (1888PressRelease) February 08, 2011 - To celebrate Black History Month, Mather's-More Than a Café on 83rd Street will host three day-long events featuring performances, cuisine, and vendors on February 18, 25, and March 11, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
On three upcoming Fridays, Mather's-More Than a Café will showcase traditional African heritage by hosting local African vendors displaying and offering goods available for purchase, such as handmade Afro-centric dolls, pillows, and home accents.
Attendees are invited to savor the flavors of Africa. Featured dishes will include chicken couscous, banana bread, North African lentil soup, Moroccan carrot salad, Tunisian meatballs, sweet potato fries, and Ethiopian greens with homemade spiced cheese.
The February 25 and March 11 events will also feature a "Seniors Portraying Legends" performance from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m., in which older adults from the community will impersonate and tell the story of significant African American historical figures.
In addition, on Friday, February 11 at 1pm, special guest speaker, George Leighton, will give a memorable presentation on his life. Leighton, a retired African-American judge, was nominated by President Gerald Ford for a seat on the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois in 1975. He is an established Life Member in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and has served the Chicago branch as president and general counsel for several years.
