His specialty has been retrievers, hunt-test hunting dogs, and retriever field trials but he has trained many dogs for obedience as well. His training methods are based on the principles of Mindset Before Methods. He claims that having the proper mindset and the proper training philosophy are what is most important in dog training.
In 2013 Hayre published a book titled The Quest: Mindset Before Methods, The Path to Dog Training Success. Six essential principles crucial to effective dog training are introduced in this book through a fictional story of a man learning these principles from his mentor. These principles in this book apply to any form of dog training, whether it is agility training, any dog sports training or simply obedience training for a family pet.
This book is now being introduced through individual Podcasts, each one based on one of the principles in the book, with deeper explanation picking up where the book may leave off.
