Maryland Students Help Haitian Students Through HaveServe.org
Students from Benjamin Banneker Middle School recently pulled together to improve educational opportunities for fellow students in Haitian villages, with the help of nonprofit HavServe.org.
- Baltimore, MD (1888PressRelease) August 06, 2011 - Benjamin Banneker Middle School students are actively working to provide continued support to the children of Haiti. With excitement and intense participation before the end of the school year, students in Ms. Whitney's English class, with the help and support of the entire school, launched a backpack and school supplies drive to continue the relief efforts in Haiti.
Donna Whitney, the English teacher, said she wanted to get the students involved in collecting supplies for four elementary schools in Haiti. The project was planned with the support of the School Service Learning Coordinator, Bervely Mullen, to fulfill the Students requirement in the 7th grade English curriculum.
Through the project, the children at Banneker became aware of the barriers Haitian children face in getting an education amidst the ongoing difficulties in their country, which include a lack of classrooms and electricity. However, they realized that they could help in a very simple and necessary way. Within four weeks, hundreds of pencils and crayons were collected by the students at Banneker to send to Haiti through the non-profit volunteer organization HavServe.org.
Some students said they were brought to tears after seeing photographs of the children in several schools, taken by one of HavServe's volunteers, Julie Marmor. Marmor spent over three months teaching English in a small village in Haiti and was excited to share her experience with the students at Banneker.
"Haitian children are eager to learn, but most of them cannot afford to go to school," Marmor said.
While juggling the workload of the last weeks of finals, the teachers said students at Banneker spent time during lunch and after school packing pencils, pens, markers, crayons, coloring books, binders, colored construction paper, writing paper, and other supplies to give to HavServe Volunteer Service Network for four elementary schools in a small village in Haiti.
HavServe founder Carline Brice stated that the students were so uplifted by their own efforts that they are commitment to making an ongoing difference in the lives of the Haitian students. She added that seeing the students come together on behalf of others has "filled her with hope for Haiti's future."
