  • (1888PressRelease) November 10, 2010 - COLUMBIA, Maryland -- Maryland entrepreneur Misti Burmeister has been chosen to represent the United States in the first annual "Global Peter Drucker Challenge," an international essay contest for students, young managers and young entrepreneurs. Themed: "Continuity and Change - Balancing Innovation and Time-Tested Practices," the contest attracted more than 200 entries from around the world.

Burmeister's essay titled "Empower Teachers, Transform the World," resonated with contest judges for its approach to the theme, its innovation and Burmeister's ability to decipher Drucker's management philosophy and apply it to her own vision.

Burmeister's submission placed fifth internationally, and is the only U.S. entry to earn a seat at the second annual Global Peter Drucker Forum "Managing in the Next Society" in Vienna, Austria, November 18-19, 2010.

The best-selling author of "Boomers to Bloggers: Success Strategies across Generations," Burmeister entered the contest at the suggestion of a colleague. Her essay was inspired by personal experience and by her work as a speaker and consultant. The contest, she said, presented itself at a good time.

"I had made a promise to myself to strengthen my writing and speaking skills whenever an opportunity arises, and this seemed like a great opportunity," Burmeister said.

Burmeister's essay examines the possibility of providing teachers with the kind of high-achieving leadership and personal development training that is standard curriculum for future business and management leaders, from Harvard Business School to Fortune 500 recruits.

"How can we equip administrators and teachers with the same high-quality leadership skills we value in the business world so that good teachers stay engaged in the classroom, leading students to emerge from school empowered with confidence and knowledge," Burmeister asks.

Burmeister's essay espouses the spirit of "Druckerian" duality of teaching and learning from the young generation, one that Drucker believed is essential in management innovation.

Widely considered to be the "father of modern management," Peter Drucker (1909-2005) was a Vienna-born writer, management consultant, and self-described "social ecologist." He wrote extensively on human organization and management across business, government and nonprofit sectors. His studies and writings anticipated some of society's major management developments of the late twentieth century, including privatization and decentralization.

The top six winners, which include essayists from Germany, Switzerland, UK, India and Argentina will be flown by the Peter Drucker Society to Vienna to attend Forum 2010.
