- Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) October 20, 2011 - Philadelphia based international law firm Marks & Sokolov has invited Russian Ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak to provide a unique insight into the changing relations between the United States and Russia at an event hosted on Wednesday, October 19 by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia. The media may question Ambassador Kislyak as part of the program.
Ambassador Kislyak will speak to the significance of strong bilateral relationship between Russia and the United States on fundamental issues such as global energy security, Iran's nuclear program, arms control and improving economic ties during a time of global financial uncertainty. President Obama opened the door in 2009 for a new relationship with Russia by calling for a "reset," but with the rapidly approaching elections both in Russia and the U.S. in 2012, this relationship may be altered again, and, thus, his view are particularly timely.
Bruce S. Marks, Managing Director of Marks & Sokolov, played an essential role in securing Ambassador Kislyak to speak at the event. Marks opened the first Moscow office of a Philadelphia-based law firm in 1998. Marks sees the critical importance of building a stronger relationship with Russia. "America should think strategically about how we can build the pillars of a stronger relationship with a major power in the world," Marks said. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (1979) and its Law School (1984), Marks understands that securing this new relationship requires an open discussion. He stressed, "If the United States and Russia don't cooperate, its 'one step forward, two steps backwards,' as Vladimir Lenin wrote. Instead, Russia and America need to move into the future together."
The event is open to the public, but reservations are required by calling 215-561-4700 or visiting www.wacphila.org. It will be held at the Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel on 220 South 17th Street, Philadelphia PA. A cocktail reception will begin at 6pm, and the program at 6:45pm.
