Marina Bay Sands launches Youth Inspiration Internship Program
Partners with Metta School and Students Care Service to provide disadvantaged youth with learning opportunities.
- (1888PressRelease) August 12, 2010 - Singapore (30 July 2010) Marina Bay Sands today unveiled its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program which aims to help disadvantaged youth in Singapore.
Based on the parent company's core CSR pillars of youth and education, Marina Bay Sands Hotel Singapore (http://www.marinabaysands.com) has developed the Youth Inspiration Internship Program which aims to provide less privileged youth including children with learning disabilities, youth who are from low income families or out of school with the opportunity to learn valuable life skills as they develop to become independent adults.
"Marina Bay Sands is committed to helping the youth of Singapore achieve their potential in many ways including providing educational and learning opportunities. As a new member of Singapore's community, we wanted to create a CSR program to which we could meaningfully contribute," said Mr. Thomas Arasi, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marina Bay Sands.
To deliver on its commitment, Marina Bay Sands has signed Memorandums of Understanding with Metta School and Students Care Service. Metta School caters to the academic needs of children with learning disabilities, while Students Care Service helps at-risk students who face difficulties in their socio-emotional development process or in adjusting to their school life. The company worked with the National Council of Social Service to identify Voluntary Welfare Organizations that would benefit the most from the program.
Mr. Yong Soo Cheng, Principal, Metta School, said, "We are excited and encouraged that Marina Bay Sands has so kindly stepped forward to support our effort to provide our students with opportunities to learn and grow. It is also our wish that these students can find employment when they finally leave the school. Their parents have visited Marina Bay Sands and are pleased with the arrangement made for our students. We want to thank each and everyone involved in this."
Ms. Morene Sim, Executive Director of Students Care Service, said, "We are constantly seeking opportunities for our youth to learn and develop. The internship scheme provided by Marina Bay Sands is one such opportunity. It is practical and helpful in preparing our youth to make the transition to the work place. It is also an extension of the guidance we provide to young people as the staff of the identified Marina Bay Sands departments will help to train, guide and be role-models for our youth."
To date, 11 youth from Metta School and Students Care Service are participating in internships at Marina Bay Sands in the areas of hotel operations, housekeeping and pastry baking. Of these youth, five students from Metta School are pursuing their first year of the Institute of Technical Education Skills Certificate (ISC) program. The training at Marina Bay Sands over the course of two years will help them achieve their certification in housekeeping and pastry baking.
National Council of Social Service's Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Tina Hung said, "NCSS commends Marina Bay Sands for providing internship and employment opportunities to enrich the lives of disadvantaged youth in Singapore. NCSS hopes to bridge more such strategic people-private partnerships in order to reach out to make a difference and help youth reach their fullest potential."
"Marina Bay Sands is honored to partner with Metta School and Students Care Service in this initiative. We hope that our Team Members will be able to transfer their valuable knowledge of the hotel and food and beverage industry to our interns and mentor them as they embark on their journey of personal growth," Mr. Arasi said.
Marina Bay Sands will work with Metta School and Students Care Service for a period of two years initially and will review the success of the program thereafter.
