Mandatory Regulation for E-mobility Devices and Batteries Issued in NSW Australia
SGS publishes SafeGuardS on a new ruling for e-mobility devices and their batteries in Australia’s New South Wales.
- (1888PressRelease) November 29, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 163.24 on new mandatory standards for e-mobility devices and their batteries in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
These standards are in place to protect consumers from the risk of fire. As detailed in the NSW Government Gazette, Number 298-Other, issued on August 2, 2024, manufacturers and retailers have until February 2025 to ensure compliance with the various ANSI/AS/EN standards detailed in the new regulation.
Under the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2017 in New South Wales, e-bikes, e-scooters, e-skateboards, self-balancing scooters and the lithium-ion batteries used to power these devices were ‘declared articles’. This made them subject to specific mandatory safety standards which must be complied with for sale in NSW.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 163.24 includes a list of the specific standards applicable to e-bikes, e-bike batteries, e-scooters, e-skateboards and hoverboards, and links to the official definitions for declared articles.
Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 163.24 for more details.
