In conversation with Host Michael DeLon, Scola discussed the value of protecting your assets ‘by building a fence around your ideas.’ Scola defines intellectual property as a means of shielding intellectual property assets from potential theft. Just as homeowners employ fences to shield their tangible possessions, Scola asserts that intellectual property operates similarly, stating, “Ideas are what drive the engines of this economy and are worth protecting.”
He continues, “Securing a patent for your processes or products, or obtaining brand protection, is important to ensure your creative ideas remain yours. Ideas are the backbone of any business, and in order to generate revenue, these ideas must be legally owned and protected.”
Scola goes into detail on the importance of naming a product that you trademark. He states, “Good trademarks, they don't really describe what they do. They don't describe the product, they are fanciful.” He stresses that trademark approval becomes significantly more challenging when the chosen name is too descriptive. The art of trademark selection and the acquisition of patent protection offer advantages for businesses. Hiring the right team to help you with this process is worth the investment long term.”
