  • San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) May 11, 2011 - 'Jamaica Me Crazy!' - for a good cause! Makua's 58th annual fund-raising event will bring out the island in all who attend and provide an opportunity to support Voices for Children. Guaranteed to 'Jamaica you smile,' the event, 'Jamaica Me Crazy!,' is happening on Saturday, May 21 at Humphreys by the Bay on Shelter Island from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

The Makua organization was founded in 1953 by a group of Point Loma-area women; named 'Makua' (Hawaiian for parent), it is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of San Diego's children. Today, with members throughout San Diego County, the organization raises money in support of children in the foster care system. Since 2004, Makua's efforts have directly benefitted Voices for Children, a private, nonprofit organization providing advocacy and mentoring services to San Diego's foster children through court appointed special advocates (CASAs).

"The goal of raising one million dollars to benefit Voices for Children is within sight," commented Maria Herman, Makua president and event chair. "We are humbled by the generosity of support. This year is extra-special with the target so near, we believe that donations will bring us to this goal and beyond."

Makua's themed events are noted for providing the 'fun' part of fund raising. This year's 'Jamaica Me Crazy!' dinner/dance will feature an island-casual vibe and an occasion of pure fun. The evening includes: 'Jamaica Me Happy Hour' an open bar at Makua's Island Rum Club from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Jamaican-style dining, live entertainment with the Ace Tropic steel drum band, plus, the Dreadlock Dance floor will spin with the Ska sounds of The Skains and local recording artist Lacy Younger. A colored light show - not seen before at Humphreys - will delight the eyes as games go on at the silent auction held in Kingston's Coconut Alley.

2011 includes a unique, new initiative for Makua, a compilation CD that will feature original music by talented, local artists interested in helping area foster children. Makua and Voices for Children supporter, Lacy Younger, a San Diego-based singer-songwriter (who will perform at 'Jamaica Me Crazy!') will record and produce "Voices from the Heart," the MakuaMix CD highlighting up to 15 local recording artists. Makua's inaugural CD release will be available for purchase with all proceeds benefiting Voices for Children and the CASA program.

Makua supporters enjoy a great time at the annual events while providing support for children in San Diego's foster care system. Participation in reaching the one million dollar goal for 2011 and the fun of 'Jamaica Me Crazy!' will yield the best island vacation in San Diego - Yah Mon!
Tickets for the event start at $125; VIP tickets are $225. To learn more about Makua and the upcoming 'Jamaica Me Crazy!' event, visit www.makua.org. For more information about Voices for Children, please visit www.speakupnow.org
