Lynne Mitchell Scholarship Winners from Jamiaca
Two outstanding Grade 6 students, Ashanique Russel and Ashaylia Duncan, earned the Lynne Mitchell Foundation scholarship. The scholarship is valued at $2,500 and enables them to attend Hampton School for Girls in Malvern, St. Elezabeth, Jamaica.
- (1888PressRelease) September 05, 2013 - MIRAMAR, FL - The Lynne Mitchell Foundation, which began last year to honor the memory of a Miramar resident of the same name, has awarded its first scholarships to Ashanique Russell, 13 and Ashaylia Duncan, 13, students who recently graduated from Grade 6 at Seaview Primary School in Southfield, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. Russell and Duncan each earned a $2,500 high school scholarship to attend Hampton School for Girls in Malvern, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica beginning this upcoming September.
Both Russell and Duncan were chosen for the award based on their excellent academic records and the leadership qualities they each brought to light in their stellar scholarship essays. Each student will continue to earn the scholarship yearly in $500 increments, provided they continue to demonstrate strong academic progress and extra-curricular leadership skills.
Russell and Duncan were both honored for their achievement at the recent Lynne Mitchell Memorial Service and Dinner held on Saturday, July 27, 2013 in Mayfield, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. With over 250 guests in attendance, including the families of both scholarship recipients, the event brought a community together to honor a servant leader and the legacy she left behind to show our love to others and make a positive difference.
"We are so proud of Ashanique's and Ashaylia's accomplishments," says Marlene Gordon, president of the Lynne Mitchell Foundation. "We wish them both continued success in their high school careers at Hampton School for Girls. Our hope is that they will both excel and use their talents to make a positive impact in the lives of others. The high school scholarship program is just one of the ways that the Lynne Mitchell Foundation fulfills its mission of, 'Growing love... one act at a time.'"
In addition to the scholarship program, the Lynne Mitchell Foundation directly assists students at Seaview Primary School gain access to the resources they need to succeed in school and in life. Additional programs include a school transportation program to help with bus fare, a school lunch program for the students, and funds to aid in the renovations of the 53-year-old one-room schoolhouse for students in grades 1 through 6.
"It's heart-wrenching to see the conditions in which these students have to try to learn, and our goal is to show them that there are people who care about their lives and their future," says Gordon. "We aim to build a brand new school facility for these students, with real classrooms, a computer lab, school library and cafeteria."
