Lynne Mitchell Foundation's 2nd Annual 'Night Under the Stars' Gala Raises $150,000
The Lynne Mitchell Foundation kicks off capital campaign, with the 2nd annual 'Night Under the Stars' gala, to build new school for under served youth in Jamaica.
- Miami, FL (1888PressRelease) October 08, 2014 - The Lynne Mitchell Foundation, which began in 2012 to honor the memory of a beloved Miramar resident of the same name, hosted their second annual "Night Under the Stars" Gala on September 27. The event, which had sold out weeks before, raised funds for the educational needs of underprivileged children attending Seaview Primary School in Southfield, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, where Lynne Mitchell was born and raised.
The gala raised $150,000 through raffles, silent and live auctions and cash donations to directly benefit the children of Seaview Primary. The foundation used the gala as the vehicle to kick off its $500,000 Capital Campaign to build a new school building to replace the dilapidated structure that fails to meet the needs of the students and teachers.
Southfield, like much of its surrounding area, is a small, rural, farming community. Since October 1, 1959, Seaview Primary School has served the local children and families by providing elementary school education. The school, which is essentially a one-room school-house, is home to roughly 170 students between 4 - 13 years of age and all of low socio-economic backgrounds. The overall infrastructure of the school is in poor condition with makeshift classrooms separated by chalkboards, noise interference that diminishes the learning-teaching process, and a leaking roof. Through the contributions of the Lynne Mitchell Foundation, dilapidated windows and doors were replaced at the school this year - the first time in its 55 year history. The students at Seaview do not have a cafeteria, access to library books, computers or even basic school supplies.
"The residents of South Florida and supporters from as far away as Toronto, New York, Denver, and Atlanta, all came together to help our Jamaican brothers and sisters in an unparalleled way," said Marlene Gordon, president and founder of the Lynne Mitchell Foundation. "Through the funds raised from the event, we can begin to take steps to build a new building and provide an environment that will significantly enhance the learning and teaching potential and outcome of the student body and staff."
Sponsors included Momentum Consulting Corp., Bacardi U.S.A., Inc., TekPartners, and Sedgwick LLP.
