Lynne Mitchell Foundation Raises More Than $7,000 For New Backpacks For Underprivileged Students
The Lynne Mitchell Foundation has raised more than $7,000 in funds to contribute to underprivileged children attending Seaview Primary School in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica for their education.
- Miami, FL (1888PressRelease) May 27, 2015 - In less than one week the Lynne Mitchell Foundation, which began in 2012 to honor the memory of a beloved Miramar resident of the same name, raised more than $7,000 in funds to provide backpacks filled with school supplies for the underprivileged children attending Seaview Primary School in Southfield, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, where Lynne Mitchell was born and raised.
The money raised will help fill approximately 200 backpacks with the proper materials the deserving students at Seaview need in order to learn. These backpacks will be distributed in August - just in time for the upcoming school year.
"This year our initial goal to raise $6,000 was met and surpassed in less then a week," said Marlene Gordon, president and founder of the Lynne Mitchell Foundation. "This marks our third year hosting this fundraiser and we couldn't be more excited and more grateful to all our generous supporters. These backpacks will equip the Seaview students with the supplies they need to learn and help them begin their school year on the right foot."
Southfield, like much of its surrounding area, is a small, rural, farming community. Since 1959, Seaview Primary School has served the local children and families by providing elementary school education. The school, which is essentially a one-room schoolhouse, is home to roughly 200 students between 4 to 13 years of age and all of low socio-economic backgrounds. The students at Seaview do not have a cafeteria, access to library books, computers or even basic school supplies.
The overall infrastructure of the school is in poor condition with makeshift classrooms separated by chalkboards, and noise interference that diminishes the learning-teaching. Through the contributions of the Lynne Mitchell Foundation, dilapidated windows and doors were replaced in 2014 and the leaking roof was replaced this year - the first time in its 55-year history.
